Marie Claire Fashion news: New York Fashion Week, Carolina Herrera

HIGH-WAISTED SHORTS are undoubtedly one of the most consistent trends to have emerged during this season's New York Fashion Week. Even Carolina Herrera, doyenne of the Park Avenue princesses and red carpet favourite to the likes of Renée Zellweger, included them in her collection.

Needless to say, they weren't your average run-in-the-park kind of shorts. Fashioned from sumptuous silk faille or lace, Carolina's 'cocktail shorts' were worn with black devoré blouses or pleated silk jackets. The result? In a word: dramatic. If only one image sticks in the mind of the front row after this show it will undoubtedly be Natasha Poly prowling down the runway in her black silk cocktail shorts and Catwoman-inspired shades.

It wasn't all about the shorts of course; even Park Avenue princesses have offices to go to (well, some of them), homes in the Hamptons to visit and benefits to attend.

To fulfil all the other aspects of her clients' lives, Carolina offered up classic white shirts, silk chiffon gowns, cashmere cardigans and cotton canvas skirts.

Inspired by the watercolours of Jeremiah Goodman, the palette was warm and bright - think brick red, clementine orange and azure blue - with some dramatic, lively prints and embroidery used to garnish the show.

A celebration, then, of a collection, with an outfit for every eventuality - although we're crossing our fingers Renée chooses the shorts for her next red carpet outing.
