Catwalk Report: Aquascutum

Aquascutum SS08

AQUASCUTUM MIGHT BE more than 150 years old, but it's mission - 'to provide stylish protection from the unpredictable British weather' - has never changed.

For the coming season, that promise is fulfilled in a sophisticated mix of handpainted rose prints, seascape silks and textured paisley embroidery. Coats and trenches, of course, reign supreme, but there are also tailored blazers, loose-fitting harem pants, asymmetric-cut dresses and some great city shorts.

On the catwalk, a nod to the Orient was made in the high-necked cut of some of the coats and the kimono-style belts, while the models' bow-shaped buns also carried something of the Geisha about them.

Proportions in general were a concept to be played with: billowing trousers fell loosely before being nipped in at the hem and sleeves were cut at different lengths on each arm, while tunic dresses hung shapelessly away from the body in marked contrast to winter's form-fitting, body-con silhouette.

The colours, although muted at first, morphed into punchy bright pinks and primary-hued embroidery, which combined with the stylish shapes made this collection the perfect antidote to the British weather.
