Prada Catwalk Report S/S 2008

Prada SS08

A TWISTED, FANTASY world greeted the front row at Prada this week, where a mural of mermaids falling into a tortoise's tummy and giant, sexually ambiguous flowers provided the backdrop to a fairytale collection.

'In this ever-changing world, it's time for new creativity,' said Miuccia Prada backstage. 'My collection is about looking forward. About a woman's imagination in our changing world.'

But if free-flowing imagination gave fruit to this collection, it stemmed from a dark mind. Intoxicating and strangely absorbing, the arresting, challenging pieces demanded attention and then slunk into the deepest recesses of our desires.

The models glided down the catwalk in a dreamlike state, with smokey, troubled eyes, pale, ghostly skin and unkempt, braided hair. Their outfits were, in the main, the antithesis of summer dressing, covering the body as they did in long knits, bell-bottom trousers, checked stockings and free-flowing dresses, and certainly completely different to anything we have seen elsewhere in Milan.

There was a nymph-like naïvet to the styling with a stiff gold leather bodice worn with a light-as-air flouncy skirt, or a sheer, cobweb-printed gown paired with leather spats and neck cuff.

The accessories, too, were out of this world. High heels were encrusted with studded gems and exotic ceramic flowers and the uppers fashioned from brightly coloured leather. A different kind of fantasy altogether…
