Issey Miyake Catwalk Report S/S 2008

Issey Miyake - ready-to-wear - Spring Summer 2008 - Paris

ISSEY MIYAKE DESIGNER Dai Fujiwara took wind as his inspiration this season - and then ran with it. From the set, which was created by James Dyson, to the clothes themselves, some of which actually incorporated discarded vacuum cleaner parts, this was a lesson in fashion realisation.

There were six series combined within the show - each slightly different to the last - but each paid homage to the force of nature's breath. 'Dune' was classic Miyake, all delicate pleats and oscillating delicate fabrics, while 'Sail & Weather Forecast' combined embroidered meteorological symbols to spell out the theme.

'Cyclone' was where it really got interesting: plastic off-cuts from Dyson's day job - vents, hoses, clips - were recycled into surprisingly wearable pieces and in doing so excited the huge yellow hoses which made up the catwalk set to bellow out rushes of air which threw the models' hairdos into disarray.

More delicate was 'Wind from China' - a series of brightly coloured pieces painted with Chinese ladies holding the nation's national flower, the peony, and red dye to represent the Beijing Olympics.

Everything though was interesting, thought-provoking and new. A note of caution though: Dai Fujiwara might be able to make Dysons next season's must-have accessory, but we suggest you leave dismantling household cleaning devices to the experts.
