Winter wedding guest outfits: just where do you really start?
'A great coat is the key' says Mare Claire's fashion editor: 'It's the one thing that will really pull your whole look together if you get it right. And remember it's going to be cold so style it out and wrap up like a pro'.
So. Coat first. The on to the rest of the look: there are loads of wedding guest dresses (and trousers for that matter) to choose from - just make sure you have a trial with the coat before the big day.
Next, the dress. Don't be restricted by traditional wedding guest rules. These days, you're far more likely to see guests experimenting with shape and colour, often ditching the tweed two-piece in favour of something a little cooler. Plus, choosing something a little less classic means you can wear it again.
And of course, you don't even have to go for a dress. Fancy jumpsuits and luxe tailoring are more than weeding-appropriate these days so we've pulled together some looks and styling tips on how to create Jessica Biel and Alicia Vikander's winning looks which firmly skew the trad dress code.
Naturally, the style of ceremony you're invited to will very much dictate your look. Church ceremonies generally call for covered shoulders.Evening weddings can be a little more glam, and should you be off to a BlackTie event, it's all about floor-grazing gowns and lashings of accessories.

First up, Sienna Miller, who gives a masterclass in wearing a floor-length gown without upstaging the bride. A floaty fabric, muted print and minimal make-up ensure she's dressed up enough without being OTT. A light, unstructured up-do is perfect for showing off the dress while a faux fur coat will add just enough polish to her wedding guest outfit.
