As the 1980s progressed, so did Princess Diana's love affair with fashion. Initially guided by the staff at Vogue to pursue a particular look, the Princess gained confidence in her own style and soon began to wear pieces by international designers including Versace, Christian Lacroix, Ungaro and Chanel. At the peak of the Eighties, Diana had developed the Dallas look of big hair, huge shoulder pads, sharp edges and glitzy earrings. This floor-length red number typified the look when a rather glum-looking Diana stepped out with Prince Charles for an official dinner in Melbourne, Australia.
