The race to the Oscars 2017 is already hotting up. Though the Oscars (or Academy Awards) won’t take place until 26th February next year, we’ve already got a pretty good idea of who might be in the running to scoop one of Hollywood’s biggest prizes.

Best Actress

Emma Stone

As ever there are no dead certs. The predicted contenders for Best Actress at the 2017 Oscars have all delivered knock-out performances, from exciting British newcomer Ruth Negga (who plays Mildred Pierce in Loving) to veteran Hollywood star Annette Bening (20th Century Women). The early favourite appears to be Emma Stone for La La Land, Whiplash director Damien Chazelle’s original Hollywood musical which is set to be a bit of an Oscar-magnet across the board. But let’s not count out Amy Adam’s critically acclaimed performance in Arrival or a beautifully sensitive portrayal of Jackie Kennedy by Natalie Portman in Jackie.

Here are the Oscars 2017 nominee favourites for Best Actress:

Emma Stone (La La Land)

Ruth Negga (Loving)

Annette Bening (20th Century Women)

Natalie Portman (Jackie)

Amy Adams (Arrival)

Best Actor

Oscars 2017 Casey Affleck

It looks likely that the lesser-known (but supremely talented) brother of Ben Affleck, Casey Affleck, will be a big name in the Best Actor nominee category for his turn in brilliant indie film Manchester by the Sea, which we recently featured as a one-to-watch in our best movies 2017 round up. But the range and quality of male movie leads this year means the category looks pretty crowded. There’s also Ryan Gosling looking to mirror Emma Stone and score his first Oscar nomination for La La Land, the magnetic Joel Edgerton (Loving) as well as competition from heavyweight veterans Denzel Washington (Fences), Tom Hanks (Sully) and a new contender in Warren Beatty for the critically acclaimed comedy Rules Don’t Apply.

Best Supporting Actress

Oscars 2017 Michelle Williams

Oscars 2017 Best Supporting Actress contender Michelle Williams

Critics were falling over themselves to praise Michelle Williams’ performance in Manchester by the Sea so it seems likely that she’ll make the cut. Ditto for Brit actress Naomie Harris in Moonlight. 20th Century Women is also building momentum with a potential nod for Greta Gerwig (who also stars in Oscar-tipped Jackie). Felicity Jones could score a second nomination (her first was for The Theory Of Everything) while Viola Davis could be third time lucky for Fences.

Greta Gerwig (20th Century Women)

Naomie Harris (Moonlight)

Felicity Jones (A Monster Calls)

Michelle Williams (Manchester By the Sea)

Best Supporting Actor

Oscars 2017 Mahershala Ali

Mahershala Ali might not be a household name yet, but the 2017 awards season should change all that. The House of Cards star is one of the favourites to win Best Supporting Actor for his turn in the brilliant Moonlight. But, as ever, nothing is certain. Ali will face competition from Aaron Eckhart (Sully), Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water) and Dev Patel (Lion). There’s also a predicted newcomer to this category – 19-year-old Lucas Hedges for his role in Manchester by the Sea. There’s no greater start to an acting career than an Oscar nod.

Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water)

Mahershala Ali (Moonlight)

Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea)

Dev Patel (Lion)

Aaron Eckhart (Sully)
