Let’s silence all the basics

Everyone’s favourite photo-sharing app, Instagram, is rolling out an exciting new mute feature and we can’t wait to test it out on all our annoying friends.

We all know that social media procrastination is too real. It’s just so easy to fall down a scrolling hole for hours and before you know it you’ve lost the best part of your Saturday morning to avo brunch photos from basics you knew years ago. Urgh.

So how does Instagram’s new mute button work exactly? Well, this long-lusted-after feature means you can basically silence selected user’s posts, or both their posts and their stories. And here’s the very best part: they have no idea, so no awkward moments down the pub.

Another great thing to remember is that you can still direct message the muted lot, as well as visit their profile and tag them in posts. You’ll also still get notified about any comments too. All it means is you don’t have to be bombarded with incessant updates if they are driving you a bit cray.

To mute someone’s posts all you have to do is just tap the three dots next to their name and choose the ‘Mute Posts’ option. Another pop-up will appear asking if you’re defo sure and then you’re done. Super simple, right?

Both Twitter and Facebook already allows its users to mute people. Twitter lets you remove an account's Tweets from your timeline without unfollowing or blocking it. And you can ‘snooze’ friends for a good 30 days with Facebook.

The Insta mute button, arriving imminently, is yet another recent update to the social media platform. It’s only been a few months since developers rolled out another fresh feature, Instagram Shopping, which lets users browse their fav items and shop them all within the app.

So now we have our mute button, imagine how much time you’ll claw back to waste on Snapchat.
