'I figured that you wouldn’t mind maybe me parachuting in just to say how much I love you’

This week marked Barack and Michelle Obama’s 25th wedding anniversary, with the former president and first lady celebrating the moment in public.

While 53-year-old Michelle was on stage addressing the Pennsylvania Conference for Women yesterday, she was surprised when her husband aired a two-minute video in honour of his wife to mark their anniversary, one-upping every romantic comedy ever made.

‘Hey honey – listen I know you are with all these important Pennsylvania woman and you’re sharing the stage with our buddy Shonda Rhimes but I had to crash this party because today we have been married for 25 years,’ the former president announced in the video.

‘Now the idea that you would put up with me for a quarter of a century is a remarkable testament to what a saintly, wonderful, patient person you are,’ he joked.

He continued: ‘It was a lot easier for me to do it because the fact of the matter is that not only have you been an extraordinary partner, not only have you been a great friend, someone who could always make me laugh, somebody who would always make sure I was following what I thought was right, but you have also been an example to our daughters and to the entire country.’

As Michelle teared up, Barack continued: ‘Your strength, your grace, your determination, your honesty – the fact that you look so good doing all this – the way in which you have always taken responsibility for your own actions but also looking out for the people around you – is remarkable.’

‘And it’s no wonder that as people got to know you the way I got to know you, they fell in love. And it is truly the best decision that I ever made to be persistent enough asking you out for a date that you finally gave in, and I hope that you feel the same way.’

So I don’t want to interrupt the flow of what I’m sure is a fascinating discussion,’ the former president concluded, ‘but I figured that you wouldn’t mind maybe me parachuting in just to say how much I love you.’

While showing up every husband across the world by performing the most romantic display for his wife, Michelle certainly seemed to enjoy it, taking to her Instagram later that day to return the sentiment.

‘A quarter of a century later, you’re still my best friend and the most extraordinary man I know,’ she wrote.

Congratulations to these two!
