Get cash clever

Posted by Anita Brook at 10:59 on 15 Mar 2010

Want to be rich? Anita Brook, founder of Accounts Assist is writing a weekly blog which will make you a millionaire.

Well, OK not quite. Not even close really. But her clever cash tips WILL save you a few pounds. Do your homework and save for a holiday.

Any other poor, pale, freezing, stressed girls in need of a holiday somewhere (cue violins)? There's got to be. Well with a little bit of research, I have found some smart ways to earn extra cash to pay for your holiday - and you don't even have to leave your home (bonus).

* Rent out your drive. I found this great site: ParkatmyHouse.co.uk where you can rent out spare parking spaces on your drive.  There is no admin involved as it's all booked online. According to the guys who run it, some people make £1,000+ a year! I want some of that.

* Decorate your spare room. A permanent tenant is quite a tie, but check out a new website called Crashpadder.com -you can advertise your spare room to tourists for one or more nights.  You never know, you might even make some friends along the way. A word of warning though: get permission first - you don't want an angry mortgage lender or landlord hammering on your door.

* 'Become a 5 to 9'er'. Do a bit of extra work from home in the evenings and on weekends. Peopleperhour.com has thousands of ad-hoc jobs, from designing a website or doing book illustrations to admin work and marketing. It beats watching TV every night (well maybe not, but think of the holiday)! You'll need to register as self employed before undertaking any work. You can do this with the HMRC.

Have fun and let me know how you get on - and how much you earn! One word of warning: watch out for scams. Jobs like 'envelope stuffing' are rarely worth the time they take and sometimes ask for 'set up costs' upfront. Just use your common sense, if it sounds dodgy don't touch it.

I used PeoplePerHour to get a few articles written for my website.

Work as completed on time and was of great quality.

Definitely worth checking them out.

I've also used Parkatmyhouse to rent a parking space near Stansted Airport before and saved over £30.

I work in PR and I have tried using People Per Hour a few times.

It is a good concept, but I found that I couldn't compete with the low low bids.

The jobs I went for were won by people building half what I would be willing to do the job for.

I heard of Crashpadder a few months back and have been thinking of adding my spare room for a while - think I'll do it now. Has anyone had any experience of the site? I need to go to London on business next month too so I may try it out then.

I've just added a room! Looking forward to my first guests. I hope they're not nutters.

Lisa, I completely disagree. I have used People Per Hour to get design jobs and i have won some great jobs. If the pitch is good enough with lots of examples of your work, businesses don't go for the cheap option.

I have to say I have used People Per Hour and found some really good jobs.

Like everything, there is competition but if you target the pitch well you stand a good chance.

Some great ideas here. I'd heard of sofa surfing but crashpadder sounds like a much better deal!

Might have a look at people per hour too - sounds like it's definitely worth a look.

Parkatmyhouse sounds a great idea - earn money & then use it to save money on airport parking!

Re. PeoplePerHour - depends VERY much on what your market / skill set is. I'm in IT and there are some VERY cheap bids put in, and soem folks will take the cheap bids.

Having said that, have found work on there and the expectations of buyers are more realistic than a lot of other freelance sites.

Just come back from a meeting with someone who posted a job on Peopleperhour.

The market has changed someone and freelancers are having to lower their prices. Therefore this is a useful engine to direct the client to get 'value for money' from the one-man-bands!

Client did tell me that I was the most expensive quote but with the most experience. Which bodes well!
