An update from Haiti
Posted by Eleanor Young at 16:47 on 15 Feb 2010
So, Egg is back from Haiti in one piece and I've hardly seen anything of him. It seems he went straight from Port au Prince to a shoot (photography, not hunting!) in London, to a party, to the IMAX in Waterloo to see a 3D film with Fergus. I tell you, it's all go with him.
I can't get that much out of him re: Haiti in the short time we have spent together - (i..e. in the car to Berko on the way back from London) I guess, it's hard to make sense of something that's so far removed from life here. What he has told me is that three weeks after the earth-quake, he saw that the devastation has been replaced with some sort of order and the Haitians trying their best to get on with things. He told me about a café for example, that the Haitains have set up serving only Haitian food - so they're trying to help themselves. On the other hand, there's a camp of 3000 people there who have only yams and turnips to eat and who have to buy their own bottled water but who have no jobs due to injury / the fact their place of work was destroyed, and so are essentially just being left to die and there's absolutely nobody to help them.
You can't come back from a place like that and it not affect you in some way, so Egg - along with his photos which I have said I will post a link to, as well as his own blog - will also be giving me a link for those who haven't had a chance yet to give, to send donations.
There's been much said about whether it's ‘voyeuristic' of journalists and photo-journalists to go to Haiti but from what Egg told me, they want their stories to be told, they want their plight to be known and they don't want to be forgotten.

Good on him I say, it has all gone very quiet here in India media wise. It needs to be in the public domain lest we forget.Look forward to the link.
