Lara Masters' Blog

Lara's New Year's Resolutions' Blog; They're pretty much a repeat of last year's list plus "Do New Year's Resolutions".

It's officially 2010 then. Time to put away childish things - or at least give the mince-pies and Chocolate Mint Bailey's a rest - and get down to setting goals for the year ahead. Stress. I didn't get through my 2009 list but perhaps; "Find my life's purpose" was too lofty? Maybe it's just not a 12-month job.

Well, it's back on the agenda for this year along with the more bite-size; "Eat more fruit and veg" with the caveat "- the cocoa bean is no longer strictly a legume when it says Dairy Milk on it." This is because when my Mum came over to cook Christmas lunch, she was aghast at all the cupboards haemorrhaging with Custard Creams, miniature Bounties, Jaffa Cakes and Freddo Frogs. Having managed the phenomenal feat of keeping me away from sugar completely ‘til I was 2 years old (which resulted in me never having any fillings), it was a shock for her to discover how in just 20 years - or so - I'd turned my kitchen into such a den of sugar-coated inequity.

That night when I called Mum in tears because I wasn't getting given as many clues as everyone else in music board-game Spot the Intro, she pointed out my sobs were prompted by the cocktail of mince-pies, Christmas pud, strawberry sponge and Ferrero Rochers I'd been consuming all day - and Mum was of course right to blame sugar over-load for my melt-down as how ridiculous would it be to actually cry because you weren't getting given enough clues in Spot the Intro? Only a proper nut-job would be hiding in the corridor blubbing on the phone to their Mum because they knew all the words to White Stripes' "7 Nation Army" but momentarily forgot the song's title so weren't allowed any points.

Anyway, I've had an apple this morning and planning on putting cucumber and spring onions strips in my duck pancakes tonight so I feel I'm all over that resolution.

I've also listed;"Make full physical recovery" which I always throw in the mix so I don't find that at the year's end, I've magically achieved every goal but left out the big kahuna - like when you don't buy a lottery ticket one week. (My advice there is don't start buying lottery tickets - that way when you see Eamonn picking out the exact 6 numbers you would have chosen had you been fool enough to dabble in such fripperies, you can continue relaxing on your sofa nonchalantly munching mini pappadams.)

It would just be uber-ironic if I managed to crack my list and ended up all wise and full of my life's purpose (plus anti-oxidants and fibre) but still had to have someone else wipe my peachy derriere. What a bummer that would be.

And the most important goal that's relevant every year so always makes an appearance is simply; "Be grateful." Frankly, it takes work to make gratitude your attitude so this year I've decided that if I'm having a wobble I will scare myself into seeing the glass not just half full but overflowing, with the use of frightening clichés like; "Life's too short", "You're a long time dead", "This isn't a rehearsal" and my home-grown fave; "If you can manage to Wikipedia Dignitas (Swiss euthanasia clinic) - you don't need it."

I hope you too are now sufficiently terrified into seeing all the good things in your life and no longer thinking about your cellulite or why he hasn't texted. Happy 2010 y'all!

Sweetie, your 1st blog of 2010 is one to be proud of.
I've spent the day gloomy with a frog lodged in my throat... January blues for no reason (aside from perhaps a "sugar over-load" perhaps we can name it a chocolate infused melt-down! ha
Anyway your blog has really put a smile on my face and I second the need for a positive attitude and outlook ...as well as perhaps the addition of a fruit or
two in our diet ;) x

Glass is certainly half full now. It would be possitively over flowing if you could send me some Freddo's and Percy pigs over to Delhi for me!
