Boy George-ous!

Someone who has done extensive research into such matters recently told me; "alcohol is the devil". I would augment that statement slightly and say; "alcohol brings the devil out". Some people, like my mum, just don't have much devil in them in the first place so Beelzebub doesn't get an awful lot done when she's on the Margaritas but others will bend over backwards for Lucifer, and not metaphorically, when they're on the liquor. I know you know what I'm talking about.

It's all well and good if you're in the mood for shenanigans but if, like me, you mostly want to go out and boogie all night, it gets old having to simultaneously field the onslaught of slavering drunkards wanting to make sweet sweet love to you (although quite how they think they're going to achieve this is another question altogether).

So imagine my joy when I discovered the existence of a drink and drugs free nightclub... What? Que? Quoi?! But?... yes, you read right; iconic 80s pop phenomenon Boy George has opened a monthly night where you imbibe such elixirs as "Safe Sex On The Beach" and "Virgin Bloody Mary"s and no one tries to push pills down your throat or anything up your nose, in fact all orifices remain happily unmolested - except your lugholes which are filled with the big fat bass from house anthems (don't expect to hear Karma Chameleon).

I went to November's "Godspeed" and the dance floor was filled with people getting down and properly dancing - even raving - whilst being fully in command of their faculties, aware of other people's space and even familiar with the notion that it might be inappropriate to request a thorough health check from someone you've just met. A lot of the Godspeed crowd are 'in recovery' so abstaining is a way of life - literally - and then there are others like me who want to get on with the serious matter of dancing without being interrupted by ne'er-do-wells on the sauce who look like they need the wheelchair more than you.

Anyway, Boy George (pictured with me above) DJs at the club and he's totally divine. And if you want to experience 'a different high' the next one is on Saturday 12th December at Apothecary in London's King's Cross. You're certain to have a night you'll remember!

I like the ironic cocktail names. Can you remember any more?

Boy George is looking a good deal healthier than when last seen, when he was starting to resemble the portrait Aleister Crowley kept in his attic. So it seems to be doing him some good...
