Obama stole my boyfriend

Barack Obama - Celebrity News - Marie Claire

In the bad old days, when George W Bush was president, many of the free-roaming men (i.e. not the ones working for the Western embassies) in Kabul were engaged in do-gooding for NGOs, the UN and such like. They were mostly Democrat-sympathisers and would never have dreamt of
working for the Bush administration.

Now that Obama has taken over, things are starting to change. Dateable men are draining away by the day as they opt to work for the US state department, the DoD and the various special representatives appointed by the new commander in chief to sort out the Af-Pak problem.

"God, I've lost two of them already to Obama," lamented a friend the other day. "They're just waiting for clearance and then they're off."

Kabul is a transient place. People come and go. For those of us who have been here a couple of years and exhausted the dating pool, new talent is always pitching up.

But the latest batch of Kabul newbies is slightly scary. As the operation scales back in Iraq, it seems that security contractors previously working there are arriving here.

Now, security contactors in Kabul have had a bit of bad press lately, what with the out-of-the-buttocks-crisp-eating shenanigans. I would like to point out that I know some very nice security contractors. They are smart, decent people who care about the country.

But the bunch we ran into last week at L'atmo, the bar formerly the preserve of the "tree-huggers," was not at all nice.

A friend of mine got into an altercation with three "meatheads" as she described them. Realizing the situation was escalating, she backed off but ran into them again as she was leaving couple of hours later.

The most offensive meathead just happened to be collecting his gun from the storage locker at the entrance.

"Running away now, girlie, now I've got a gun?" the oaf said. "Scared are we?"

"What? You think having gun makes you a man?" my friend scoffed. (She has balls.)

"You should be scared."

She left and almost tripped over two men urinating in the road.

Now, not only do I not want to date these people, if I were Afghan, I certainly wouldn't want them in my country behaving like buffoons.

Slim pickings, Freddy? Uh, uh. I think we're walking into anorexic territory.

Have your say ...

glad to be out of Kabul, though I should of started a "no contractors" bar free from those guys.

Anyway I'll be back sometime, and there will be plenty of contractors kidnapped and shot to make news stories to cover.

Sounds like you'll have to find a new place to hang out

While I, too, don't want to condemn any but a few bad apples, you have reminded me of the security guy who came to evaluate our house. He asked the lady of the house to buy him a burqa so he could do "surveillance." To make it less suspicious, he said he'd paint his toes and wear high heels.
