Mums' night out

Posted by Katy Regan at 14:43 on 8 Oct 2009

I am off on my first ever girls' night out with the mums from Fergus's school this evening and as I often do on ‘first' occasions of this nature where nobody really knows you and has not been drinking with you before,  I am toying with the idea of re-invention.

How's about, rather than being the last-to-leave-the-pub total lush that I actually am I  become ‘smug mum'. I never get too pissed, never make a fool of myself , over-share or say inappropriate things about the teacher/ other parents /  my sex life and best of all, I look a million dollars in the playground the next morning, smiling patronisingly at all the other mums with their filthy hangovers.

Yeah, who am I kidding? Who wants to bet a million pounds, that I get really drunk, over-share, say nothing but inappropriate things, am last to leave the pub and look like a total dog tomorrow in the playground where I will stand wearing enormous sunglasses and avoiding that mum I cornered all evening telling her about that time I went to a nudist resort....oh and did I tell you about that time I went to a swinger's club? ....(it was work research)....oh, and how I went to stage school with Posh Spice , oh and how I have a secret guilty crush on Peter Jones from Dragon's Den...?

Come to think of it. Maybe I'll stay in....

Peter Jones? I thought it was Theo Paphitis.

Just read your blog to Amanda and she feels your pain! I picked the boy up from school recently after a similar "mum night" to be told by boring Dutch mum that "your wife seemed incredibly high last night!!" I replied that she needed to be to be out with you!Do the get wrecked thing, everyone needs someone to gossip about at the school gates.

Katy this restored my spirits! I had my first proper girls night out post baby (so 10 months on!) on Friday, with my NCT friends (so they have only known me as a Mum). I had such a great night but realised that having perhaps gotten a little carried away with the sex stories I may have been tagged the group scrubber! Oh well, there are worse things & I know that I wasn't a scrubber! Thanks for cheering me up & realising it's not worth obsessing over.
