Tour 2009!
Posted by Katy Regan at 23:08 on 30 Jul 2009
I am on tour! Yes, a book tour. I am in Manchester at the moment, the third city in a five-city tour. God, I feel like Madonna when I say that. Maybe I should have given the tour a name: Blonde Ambition Tour? Except I’m not blonde… Erm…Will I Ever be Less Than a Size Twelve Ambition Tour?
Anyway, the tour does have a name. It’s called How to Get Published and over the last two nights, and three more to come, myself, my editor Claire Bord, my agent Lizzy Kremer and Carla Bevan, super-brain editor of this very website, have been trying to impart wisdom on that very subject as well as promote my book: One Thing Led to Another with, hopefully, some success. (Although one lady did ask how I stopped emulating other writers’ voices when I write and I was like, I don’t! I can’t! I constantly try and emulate Ali Smith, Nick Hornby, Zoe Heller, Tim Lott, but it never bloody well happens!)
Anyway, it’s been an amazing turn out: 70 people in Edinburgh (first stop) about 40 in Leeds and apparently, 90 are going to be there tonight. (Shit!) So far, people have been ridiculously lovely. They’ve asked loads of questions, nearly everybody has bought my book, all had it signed (whether or not they wanted it signed was another matter entirely, of course, although I haven’t had to chase people down the street threatening them with my pen just yet.)
It makes you realise how many people get their kicks out of writing and how much talent and good old fashioned hard work there is going on out there.
I feel really lucky, and I tell you, I can see how these celebs get above their station. Swanning about in hotels for just the two nights, so far and people actually paying to come and see me talk and I feel kind of buoyed up. Imagine if that were your life! It’s a wonder Kate Winslet can fit her head through the door in the morning.
It’s a bloody good job I’m going home to my messy little house tomorrow or else it might all go to my head, too.
Now, where’s those lilies for my room I requested and I said Egyptian cotton sheets, only!

Hi Katy I saw you in Manchester last night it was really good and I am all inspired and almost jumped out of bed to go and blog this morning. I say almost as was a tad sluggish following the free wine and mini beefburgers of which I had my fair share, and of course got distracted by facebook. Anyway just to say thanks for the roadshow it was really useful and inspiring and I remember thinking 'wonder if Katy is thinking - how weird I am an actual author', must have been a bit surreal!

Also in Manchester, dragged my reluctant boyfriend along with the promise of free wine and canapes. Really enjoyed it and given me tons of ideas.

Just wondered if you could post a list of future tours and if you have anything planned in Delhi?

Hi Katy,
I was at Leeds and was completely inspired by the evening. Off now to get my novel out to Agents, you've given me the motivation to get moving!

Hi Katy, I met you last night at the London leg of your tour (I'm the pregnant one, who is still horrified by the fact that I had to turn down free champagne). I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to talk with me after the seminar, I found it really inspiring and have had ideas flying around my head all day... just need to get them all down on paper now. Thanks again, Nicola Bourne
