So after a couple of lunch dates with the celebrity my friend has decided he is a ‘bit of a douche’ (my friend’s exact words) with suspected hair plugs and a need for constant ego-stroking. Not so much the catch. She can’t even be entreated to see him again for the greater good (he has a house in Malibu, which would be perfect for entertaining friends – like me – this summer), so it’s back to civilian dating for her, although I think the very idea of going on ‘lunch dates’ highlights the essential difference between Brit and American dating.
After a straw poll of all my British friends we decided that seeing someone at lunchtime is unthinkable to any English person for a first date. Dating’s already a minefield, nevermind doing it sober. I don’t know anyone who started going out with someone without a vat of booze involved (though I’m not sure if this says something about British people in general or just reflects badly on me and my friends).

Quick straw poll of my friends: wine, wine, wine, vodka, downed 6th glass of wine, threw glass into river and snogged him! We used to have a policy of downing a shot before leaving the house. We're all happily shacked up now!
