Does my hair look fat in this?
Posted by Isabel Dexter at 16:02 on 17 Apr 2009
I think I'm finally getting to grips with this wearing only navy or black malarky. For the first time last night people actually thought I might be French. Well, until I ordered a side of chips with my Nutella-covered crepe; apparently mixing salty and sweet is trop bizarre. Even in a post-drinking 5am kinda way. But so long as I kept my mouth shut and didn't eat anything (and it was dark and people were drunk) I could almost be Parisian. I'm starting to wonder what it says about my life that this ranks as a major achievement, on a par with say, buying a baking tray in an attempt to stop using my oven for storage.
Later, fluffing up my hair in the toilet at the Truskel I was met with a look of horror from one of my Parisian friends. 'You're trying to make your hair bigger?' She asked with barely disguised disgust, 'why?'. I started to list the reasons; homegrown big hair (it's not like I have a choice), the autumn/winter catwalks - especially Dior (if it's good enough for John Galliano), the correlation between an economic downturn and oversize, bouffant hairdos, the fact that Cheryl Cole is our national sweetheart... 'Strange,' she replied, with that little shrug that I'm working on emulating and continued to smooth down her hair until it was flatter and sleeker. Suddenly I noticed that all the girls had that super-smooth, shiny hair with minimal volume. Mince! Does everything have to be skinny in this town - even hair?
