When good shoes go bad

Marie Claire celebrity photos: Gwyneth Paltrow at the London premiere of Ironman

If last autumn’s catwalks are to be believed we will be spending this summer falling off heels so vertiginously high that we need stabilisers.

In a land where five-inch heels have become if not the norm then the aspiration, and shoes can come without a heel if they so wish (Antonio Berardi) or with one stuck on upside down (Marc Jacobs) perhaps this fall from grace was inevitable.

But how can we resist the lure of the leg-lengtheners? Would Gwyneth Paltrow’s comeback have been splashed across the papers so much if she’d opted for a kitten heel on the campaign trail for Iron Man?

The models at Gucci, Miu Miu, Pucci, Dsquared2, Rodarte and Prada risked life and limb – falling at the feet of the front row who had to help them back up. ‘Sock-gate’ at Prada – where models wore slippery socks with platform heels - threatened to over-shadow the collection.

As prices reach £1,000 – yes £1,000 for a pair of shoes that could kill you – and designers declare that over five inches is impossible, surely we’ve reached the giddy heights and its time to come back down to earth?
