WE HAD A PARTY!
Posted by Megan Conner at 13:19 on 17 Sep 2008
Last night the stars turned out in force for our very own party, to mark Marie Claire’s 20th birthday. Yes, I know we’ve been banging on about that for a while, but this was the official shindig, held at London’s tres-swanky One Marylebone.
As a relative newbie to the mag (well, 15 months of service) it was the first important party I’ve ever played a part in hosting… As a member of the Ents department, I was called upon to help round up the celebrity guest list (which is no easy task, when you’re in the middle of London Fashion Week and there’s a Tropic Thunder premiere and Dolce & Gabbana party on the same night) with fellow entertainment bod Tom.
So there we were, six o’clock, at our desks - me with the curling tongs and Tom on the phone to Mischa Barton’s mum! No, we didn’t have to ask if Mischa was allowed out on a school night (interesting fact: this was the reason given for Pixie Geldof’s absence from the ‘do), but just wanted to check she was coming, her being the birthday cover star and all.
Throughout the course of the night we welcomed the likes of Jaime Winstone, Rhys Ifans & Kimberley Stewart (I can confirm it appears to me they are still dating!), Sophie Ellis Bextor, Anastacia, Alice Dellal, Tamsin Egerton and Mischa Barton through our doors (there were many more, check out the pics), and of course, HRH and friend of the MC family, Janet Street-Porter. Having now transcribed (to non-journalists, the art of typing up a tape) approximately fifteen of her hour-long interviews with stars for the magazine - including the latest, a chat with Paul O’Grady where Janet gives an amusing running commentary while interviewing (‘Paul has now left the room to roll a fag’ etc etc) - I thought it was nigh time we should meet. I’d like to say I finally put a face to the voice I spend often spend my evenings listening to while my housemates are sprawled out in front of telly, but you’d have to have been dead for the past few decades to not know what she looks like.
Other highlights included my chats with Atonement actor Benedict Cumberbatch (what a cutie) and Jaime Winstone (the loveliest celeb I’ve ever met). Apparently she asked a member of our a web team for a leg-up over the railings on her way out… Love her style!
