Miley Cyrus wears nothing but a smile
Posted by Emma Sibbles at 15:30 on 29 Apr 2008
Now I don't really have much of an opinion on Miley Cyrus (daughter of Billy Ray of Achey Breaky Heart fame) or I didn't before today. If anything I'd have felt a little sorry for her for having a dad that sings that song but apparently she is a tween star playing Disney's Hannah Montana, for all those without kids or Disney addictions and has made quite a substantial fortune.
But now she is in trouble for posing in Vanity Fair wearing nothing but a sheet. She is 15. Here on the features desk we blame:
a) Vanity Fair
b) Her parents/ manager who were apparently present at the shoot
c) Annie Leibowitz
Who in their right mind thinks it's appropriate to photograph and publish a 15-year-old girl wearing little more than a smile (it's actually more of a grimace)? It's easy to see how she would have been too in awe of a photographer like Leibowitz to say no, especially if your parents are you giving you the thumbs up as well. Do Hollywood parents go to some special training school run by Momma Spears or something? I'm pretty sure if anyone had suggested taking a picture like that of me at that age my parents would have gone ape-shit.
Seriously, what's wrong with putting some clothes on the girl?

AT LEAST SHE IS WEARING SOMETHING! YES IT WAS AND IS WRONG, BUT YOU REALLY CAN'T SEE ANYTHING THAT IS NOT MEANT TO BE SEEN! I DO BLAME IT PARTLY ON THE PARENTS! BUT I DO MOSTLY BLAME MILEY.
Comment by SAMANTHA on August 05 20:55
She is beautiful in the pic that's true but I'm still ashamed of her taking the picture, she shouldn't have been photographed with nothing but a sheet, the young girl is naked for pete sake with a sheet over her. That sickens me.I love Miley Cyrus but I still think that this pic was a big mistake!
Comment by Temari on July 22 19:31
Although the pose is provocative, how many of Miley's fan have seen it? It took me almost an hour to find the darn things on the internet to see what the fuss is about! Since I have an 8yrold who loves everything Hannah I thought I should take a look. I won't be buying vanity fair so my daughter will never know her idol's halo may have slipped a notch. Get over it people, the girl is human and so are her parents.
Comment by Louisa Dean on July 21 05:26
Oh for goodness sakes people... leave it alone! Don't you all have better things to do with your time than judge someone other than yourselves. It doesn't show anything that it shouldn't and if you don't want your children viewing their Disney idol in a pose you find offensive to you... don't show it to them! Go find something more constructive to do besides being so prudish and wasting energy focusing on something that really isn't a problem as it's no worse than Arial from the Little Mermaid after she gains her legs and is wrapped in a shower curtain.
Comment by Kim on May 16 05:54
this is wrong on so many levels!
Comment by lauren on May 12 01:28
Shame on you dad! Aren't YOU supose to protect your daughter? Miley is supose to be an example to her teenage fans. What's next? Playboy? Anything for fame, right?
Comment by Mrs. C on May 04 19:35
I feel that this photo is very seductive and should not have been taken. If her dad was and type of father he would have said"NO". My 7 year old likes Hanna Montana and i would not let her at that age do a photo shoot like that! Maybe if she was 35 but not at 15. Inappropriate. She needs to realize she is an icon and by posing for that photo she has basically said it is OK to pose almost nude for money! Got news for her it ain't!
Comment by allison on May 04 01:13
Whilst it may not be the most provocative of poses, she is wearing a sheet. Sheet suggests bed, bed suggests sex. At 15 she is under the legal age,(which I believe is higher in the US) therefore the picture is inappropriate, regardless of how revealing it may or may not be.
Comment by Est on April 30 20:09
Ok i'm confused, all the picture shows is her back. If she had turned up to some event with a backless dress no-one would have batted an eyelid so what's the issue here? It's hardly a provocative pose!
Comment by Jen on April 30 15:21
Our daughters are being abused. Our CHILDREN are being turned into sex toys. This sickens me!!
Comment by jenanne on April 30 12:32
Talk about being a hypocrite! Look at all the models aged 15,16 or less that you have published in your magazine wearing almost up to nothing! I do not say it is ok to take nude photos of children but I do think the whole fashion industry has to take its resposability. What do you do?
Comment by Louie on April 30 11:52
I have been reading that this photograph was supposed to be 'artsy' and that Miley looks innocent and beautiful in it, but here all I see is what looks to be a malnourished and sickly child - is this really the image that a 15-year-old star (or her management, who will obviously have seen the picture before print), worshipped by millions of girls younger than herself should [want to] be portraying?
Comment by Abigail on April 30 11:28
I actually think that the photograph is beautiful and shows the innocence of young girl/women. I think it would be far more demoralising for her to be posing in a short skirt and high heels.
Comment by Verity on April 30 09:25
she looks really grubby, totally inappropraite for a 15 yr old girl.
