Mad Men

Yes, we're all dying to see the new Sex and the City movie, but - let's face it - you won't actually be able to wear any of the clothes which appear in the film.
Not only will they be far too expensive, even if you could get hold of them, wearing them would be fashion suicide. (By all means be inspired by Carrie, but don't ever actually copy her. She's a fictional character, even Sarah Jessica Parker herself has never tried to dress like her alter ego in real life.)
Anyway, so that's all very well, but in the meantime, where can we look for fashion advice?
My tip? Mad Men.
Currently, showing on BBC 4 on Sunday evenings at 10pm (we're only two episodes in, so you haven't missed too much, and you can always download the first few episodes from iTunes), this New York-set drama tracks the lives and loves of a group of advertising executives in 1960.
Clearly it's not the guys we're interested in, but their girls' wardrobes.
The outfits themselves have been painstakingly put together by costume designer Janie Bryant ,so it's not just classic retro '50s or '60s stuff, but clothes that mark the change between the two decades: full skirts and bosom-enhancing twin-sets rule, along with pancake make-up and red lippie.
Watch just one episode and suddenly your Uggs and jeans don't look quite so attractive after all.
