Fun at Betsey Johnson

Betsey Johnson Autumn/Winter 2008

Now this is more like it. Betsey Johnson's show was a 'show' in every sense of the word.

Bare, coloured lightbulbs hung from the ceiling; red chairs and tables, adorned with tea lights and red roses, were stretched out from the front row; and copies of Jack Kerouac's On The Road were scattered here, there and everywhere – just in case anyone missed the meaning of the show's title, 'Beat Chick'.

In a two-for-one whammy, first we had the new collection – all black berets, red lipstick and skin-tight PVC leggings – before a special retrospective of Betsey's favourite pieces to celebrate her illustrious, 30-year-long career.

Both collections were as punky and insolent as you'd expect and when she came out to do her customary cartwheel down the catwalk, the girl sitting next to me actually started crying.

I wasn't quite moved to tears, but it was certainly the most fun I've seen any designer having on the catwalk. If Valentino had done back-flips at his retirement show in Paris last month I'm sure it would have been all the more memorable.
