In April the world was astonished by the depraved behaviour of 'cellar monster' Josef Fritzl, who stood accused of the perpetual rape and torture of his daughter, Elisabeth, whom he locked in an underground dungeon and with whom he fathered seven children. Fritzl's extraordinary reasoning his inconceivable crimes was to prevent Elisabeth from slipping into a life of 'crime and permissive sex'. He now awaits trial this month.
