Anna Paquin's acting debut in The Piano might be one of the most celebrated child performances of all time, but it almost didn't come about. In 1991, 10-year-old Anna had never acted before - save for a turn as a skunk in a school play - but attended the auditions, which had been advertised in a local paper, just because her sister and a friend were going along, and she had nothing better to do. She read a monologue for director Jane Campion and was chosen for the role, beating 5000 hopefuls.
