Born to a film director father and an Oscar-winning screenwriter mother, an acting career seemed inevitable for Maggie Ruth Gyllenhaal.
At 15 she gave her debut performance in her father's film, Waterland which set the ball rolling for her future career.
Her breakthrough came in 2001 playing the sister of her real-life brother, Jake Gyllenhaal in cult movie Donnie Darko.
A year later Maggie impressed critics in Secretary - for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe award.
Soon after she met her fiancé, actor Peter Sarsgaard, with whom she now has a daughter, Ramona.
Known for her quirky fashion, Maggie has modelled in ad campaigns for Miu Miu and Agent Provocateur.
And her biggest commercial role to date is hitting screens this summer, playing Batman's love interest in The Dark Knight.
