Born in 1981, Nicole Camille Richie was adopted by singer Lionel Richie in 1990, although he had been raising her as his daughter since she was two.
A self-confessed wild child through her teenage years, she was smoking marijuana at 13 and addicted to heroin by 19. Consequences of her drug use included five car accidents and three arrests, most recently in 2006 for DUI (driving under the influence.)
Nicole shot to fame after appearing in the reality TV series The Simple Life, alongside best friend Paris Hilton. After the first series, Nicole's weight plummeted, prompting rumours of an eating disorder, which Nicole vehemently denied.
Nicole kicked her drug habit and transformed herself into a style icon, regularly topping best-dressed lists all around the world.
In January 2008 Nicole gave birth to her daughter, Harlow Winter Kate Madden, with boyfriend Joel Madden of rock band Good Charlotte.
She is now carving out a career as a designer; her House of Harlow collection is aimed at children and named after her daughter.
