Quentin Tarantino's muse, Uma Thurman, was born in Boston to a Western Buddhist monk father and a Swedish former model mother. At 6ft tall, it wasn't long before Uma herself was lured away by the fashion world, and she headed to New York to pursue her career at the tender age of 15.
Her breakthrough acting role came in 1988 when, at 19, she won a part in Dangerous Liaisons alongside Michelle Pfeiffer and Glenn Close. A few flops followed but, in 1994 she was cast as cool gangster girlfriend Mia Wallace in Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, which became an instant cult classic. More box-office bombs ensued (The Truth About Cats and Dogs, Batman and Robin, Gattaca), but it was on the set of the latter that, in 1997, she met her future husband, Ethan Hawke. The couple married in 1998 and had two children together, Maya, in 1998 and Levon in 2002. The pair divorced in July 2004 amid rumours of his infidelity.
It wasn't until she was cast in Tarantino's two-part assassin flick Kill Bill in 2003 that she made a return to the mainstream radar. The hugely-successful films effectively relaunched her career and both earned her Golden Globe nominations.
Uma is currently the face of Virgin Media, and has also worked with Louis Vuitton and Lancome.
She lives in New York and is dating Elle Macpherson's former partner, Arpad Busson.
