Native New Yorker, Cynthia Nixon acted throughout her twenties in Broadway productions before taking on roles in US TV shows including NBC's miniseries The Murder of Mary Phagan and HBO's Tanner on Tanner.

Her profile really hit the big time however when Cynthia was cast as straight-talking and cynical lawyer Miranda Hobbes in Sex and the City. Twice Emmy-nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in both 2002 and 2003, Cynthia finally took the gong home in 2004 for the finale series.

Away from the small screen, Cynthia has two children, Samantha and Charles with her ex-partner Danny Mozes.

In 2004 it was reported that Cynthia was in a year-long relationship with education activist Christine Marinoni and since then speculation has grown over her the star's sexuality.

However, in an interview with New York Magazine in 2006, Cynthia revealed she had never felt a battle to suppress her sexuality saying: 'I never felt there was an unconscious part of me around that woke up or that came out of the closet; there wasn't a struggle, there wasn't an attempt to suppress. I met this woman, I fell in love with her, and I'm a public figure.'

Following the phenomenal success of their first silver screen adaptation in 2008, Cynthia is currently joining Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis and Kim Cattrall in filming the second Sex and the City movie.
