Born in LA on 29 September 1972 to actress Blythe Danner and the late TV producer Bruce Paltrow,
Gwyneth got bitten by the acting bug from an early age; at five, she shared the stage with her mum in a production in Massachusetts. The acting addiction proved so strong, she gave up her Art History course at the University of California to devote herself to acting full-time.
Her first big part saw her playing Wendy to Robin Williiams' Peter Pan in Steven Spielberg's Hook. But it was the 1995 thriller Se7en that gained her international acclaim - not to mention a mega-star boyfriend, in the form of Brad Pitt. The pair became engaged but split after two years together.
Gwyneth moved on to another hot Hollywood actor, Ben Affleck, with whom she starred in Bounce (dreadful) and Shakespeare in Love (excellent). The relationship may have fizzled out, but the actress picked up an Oscar for her performance in the latter.
After a string of relationships, the self-confessed Anglophile found her dream English gent: Chris Martin, frontman of hit band Coldplay. The pair tied the knot in December 2003 and have two children together, Apple, 4, and two-year-old Moses.
