Oscar-winning Charlize Theron might live the high life these days, but her childhood was hardly picture-perfect.
Aged just 15 and living in South Africa, she lost her father when her mother shot him in self-defence.
A year later, a knee injury forced Charlize to give up her dream of becoming a dancer and, after winning a local beauty contest, she decided to try her hand at modelling instead.
Quickly bored posing for the camera, at 19, Charlize's mother booked her a one-way ticket to America with Hollywood dreams in both their eyes. Turned down by numerous casting directors, she famously got a shot at the big time when an agent spotted her shouting at a bank teller who wouldn't cash a cheque she'd received from her mother, and handed her his card.
The rest, as they say, is history… Charlize has been dating actor Stuart Townsend for seven years.
