Oscar-winning Charlize Theron might live the high life these days, but her childhood was hardly picture-perfect.Aged just 15 and living in South Africa, she lost her father when her mother shot him in self-defence. A year later, a knee injury forced Charlize to give up her dream of becoming a dancer and, after winning a local beauty contest, she decided to try her hand at modelling instead.Quickly bored posing for the camera, at 19, Charlize's mother booked her a one-way ticket to America with Hollywood dreams in both their eyes. Turned down by numerous casting directors, she famously got a shot at the big time when an agent spotted her shouting at a bank teller who wouldn't cash a cheque she'd received from her mother, and handed her his card.The rest, as they say, is history… With a number of high-profile films under her belt, including Mighty Joe Young, The Italian Job and Hancock, Charlize also won an academy award for her portrayal of serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster. Charlize dated actor Stuart Townsend for nine years, but the couple split in January 2010.
