Born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1969, Cate Blanchett began her career in theatre, after graduating from the National Institute of Dramatic Art in 1992.

She made her film debut in Paradise Road in 1997; the same year she married screenwriter husband Andrew Upton.

Cate's first high-profile, international role was lead in the 1998 movie Elizabeth, for which she won Best Actress awards at both the BAFTAs and Golden Globes, plus an Academy Award nomination.

Six years later, her portrayal of Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator won her a coveted Best Supporting Actress Oscar.

Other notable movie performances include The Talented Mr Ripley and as elf queen Galadriel in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

In 2008 Cate starred opposite Brad Pitt in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. Her next venture will see her play Maid Marion to Russel Crowe's Robin Hood in the Ridley Scott adaptation due for release in 2010.

Cate also plays mother to three children, Dashiell John, Roman Robert and Ignatius Martin Upton who was born on 12 April 2008.

Cate and her husband are also currently Artistic Directors of the Sydney Theatre Company.
