A curvaceous and confident woman if ever there was one, Beyoncé Knowles was born in Houston, Texas, to Mathew Knowles and Tina Beyincé in 1981.
She began her career as the lead singer of R&B band Destiny's Child in 1998.
Five years later, Beyoncé launched her solo music career and her debut album, Dangerously In Love, was one of the biggest successes of the year.
In total, Beyoncé has won 10 Grammy awards to date for her singing.
She has also has appeared in a number of movies including The Pink Panther and, most recently, Dream Girls, which earned her two Golden Globe Award nominations. Beyoncé married long term boyfriend Jay-Z on 4 April in a private ceremony in New York.
