Born in LA in 1984 and christened Georgina Ferrera, America is Honduran and the youngest of six siblings.
She shot to fame in US series Ugly Betty, winning both an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her portrayal of the brace-wearing magazine assistant.
However, despite only just discovering international fame, America has been making successful indie films such as Real Women Have Curves and The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants for some years.
Of her success as a 'curvy' celebrity, America says: 'I think it's hilarious when people call Jessica Alba or Eva Longoria curvy. Come on. They're not curvy. They're small. I'm curvy.'
