Selma moved to New York to pursue a career in photography, but ended up training as an actress at The Stella Adler Conservatory.
In 1999, she starred in Cruel Intentions, a modern retelling of Dangerous Liaisons, alongside Reese Witherspoon and Sarah Michelle Gellar. She went on to work with Reese again in Legally Blonde, before starring in The Sweetest Thing with Cameron Diaz and Christina Applegate.
She also appeared in the movie adaptation of the comic book Hellboy in 2004, the same year she married musician, Ahmet Zappa. They later divorced in 2006, but remain friends.
2008 saw Selma star as Kim in a remake of the popular Australian sitcom, Kath & Kim.
