I’m off to the opera!

I’m usually much more likely to be found at an indie gig in a grimy pub than peeking over a posh balcony a la Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, but opera is definitely having a moment this summer. First Damon Albarn brought Dr Dee to The Coliseum, and now, GO Opera is teaming up with experimental artist/producer Kwes for a new season of spectaculars in association with Peroni Nastro Azzuro.

Pretty Woman
The aim is to convert a whole new generation by putting an eclectic, modern spin on authentic Italian opera. I like Peroni beer, so that’s a good start, right?

Kwes will be reworking an aria from La Rondine, a dramatic story of love and portrayal that’s rarely performed. Staged in a bespoke contemporary structure situated outdoors at Triton Square in Regents Place, the audience can become a part of the performance. So kind of like interactive theatre, but classier. Take blankets. And tissues. Sob!

Opera di Peroni launches on 5 July in London and then tours the country, stopping at Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow throughout the summer months. Then, word has it, the whole thing will start again for the autumn/winter season.
