Q
Where in Dublin can I buy organic/natural nail varnish?
Ruth Kenny, Kimmage
A
The main natural nail polish I know of is a brand called Suncoat, distributed in the UK by Noami Andersson of Green Hands. You can buy online from www.greenhands.co.uk. Other brands include Sante Kosmetics and Honeybee Gardens, which are both water-based polish brands.
However, the quality of some natural nail polishes, including Suncoat, haven't got the same staying power as regular polishes like Jessica and Essie - the solvents in the polish are, unfortunately, there for a reason (they help the polish bind to the nail plate, for instance).
As an alternative, you could try Ciate, which is still solvent-based, but is formaldehyde and toluene-free. The range also includes the nail oil Love, which is yummy, and Hangover Cure, which is a fabulous cuticle remover.
It's distributed by Associate Nails, which has a nail bar in Dublin at Henry Street, Dublin 1. Tel: +353 (0) 1 805 0400.
Meanwhile, the Nail Doctor's products at Boots, which don't contain formaldehyde and are toluene-free, include some great nail treatments for splitting, peeling and weak nails.
