Lightweight, natural-finish foundations

Marie Claire Beauty Academy: Foundation

If you have great skin, don't cover it up with layers of foundation; instead, just dot a small amount where you need it and blend well.

Choose a liquid foundation or tinted moisturiser, which should work to highlight the skin rather than mask it, and look for 'light coverage' on the packaging.

Lancôme Color Ideal, £25, is a best-seller in this market thanks to pearly particles in the fluid, which help give a luminous finish, and opaque colour pigments, which even out your complexion. It's also infused with special oils which evaporate from the skin leaving only an ultra-fine film of colour behind.

We're also big fans of By Terry Light Expert, £38, with its super-size brush applicator, which allows you to control exactly your coverage.

If you have dry skin, Bobbi Brown Extra SPF 25 Tinted Moisturizing Balm, £32, puts you on the effortless route to dewy, glowing skin and has added vitamin A, shea butter and carrot extract to keep your face moisturised.
