Trendwatching: beauty in 2010
A dash of French chic and some Miami-style decadence...
The spring/summer catwalk shows saw several new hairstyles emerge on top trends for this year. Among them was an ‘up do' based around the French chignon style, an elegant low bun that sits at the nape of the neck. Keep it messy and textured to avoid that too-perfect pre-wedding look.
Make-up-wise, bring a dash of Miami cool with some 80s-style neon pink lipstick - a look that was seen on dozens of models at the last London Fashion Week. Best get that fake tan on too, for maximum effect.

The fashion tip
The boyfriend blazer and this season's colour....
Step into a party, goes the saying, like you're stepping onto a yacht. Wise words indeed, and a maxim that surely applies to the ‘boyfriend blazer', one of the wardrobe staples for Spring/Summer 2010. Channelling the spirit of a summer spent aboard mega yachts, a blazer is an easy way to look chic on a fresh spring day or a mild summer's night. Relaxed, cool and thankfully a rarer sight than the now ubiquitous trends of ‘boyfriend jeans' and the ‘boyfriend shirt'.
If in doubt, make ‘white' your watchword this year - it's been the colour of choice across dozens of designer's catwalks recently. We recommend seeking out a crispwhite cotton shirt dress and teaming it with a thin belt and heels for a fabulous spring look.

The travel must-do
A boutique bolt-hole amid the minarets and the historic hillside city of Lisbon...
Let the ochre and rose-hued North African city of Marrakech be your winter playground. Once the preserve of hippies and those on the backpacker trail, this exotic location is now home to some of the world's best boutique hotels. A firm favourite is Riad Farnatchi, a private courtyard-house hotel hidden deep within the medina and offering the essence of modern style in ancient surroundings.
Alternatively, the year-round temperate climate of Lisbon in Portugal makes it a firm favourite with those seeking some winter sun. The city offers a combination of great restaurants, bars and clubs with some of the country's best beaches on your doorstep. Head out to Cascais for the latter and make the cool art-deco haven Hotel Britania your base. Ask for a room on the top floor where the outdoor terraces let you soak up the Lisbon light.

Summertime sounds
Afro-pop meets preppy indie and some full-on carnival craziness...
If the summer's outdoor festivals feel like light years away, then give thanks for Vampire Weekend's Conta, one of the most eagerly anticipated albums of early 2010. Their debut album, 2008's Horchata, combined cerebral indie lyrics with the kind of sunny sound you'd hear in old West African pop, making for a preppy new-wave approach that saw this New York band take festivals such as Glastonbury and Reading by storm. Their latest long player is out now.
For breakneck carnival beats from one of last year's most exciting new artists, look no further than the just-released Fabric Live compilation, mixed by Lisbon's Buraka Som Sistema. These are fierce party anthems shot through with a tribal African sound and proving the perfect livener for a gloomy winter's day. The sound of summer straight to your iPod.
