How to get into ...

Ditch The Diet

By Lucy Hutchings  on Monday 2 March 2009

Marie Claire health news: diet

This month's Big Question asks is it time to ditch the diet and just eat cake? New research reveals that size 14 women are the happiest of all, so Mimi Spencer argues that we should all stop crash dieting and constantly counting the calories.

Instead, we should think more about portion sizes, our snacking habits, our drinking levels and exercise regime

Have you struggled to keep the weight off throughout your life or constantly tried faddy diets in a bid to lose the pounds? What did you make of Mimi's words of advice?

We'd love to hear your views so please leave your comments in the box below.

Hi Marie Claire....

This is a first for me... I've never written into a magazine before, and I haven't bought Marie Claire for years, but I just wanted to say I loved your "smile" issue.

In particular, the article on page 61, The Marie Claire big question.... really struck a chord with me.

I have 3 lovely children aged 11, 9 and 3 and whilst having kiddies does change your shape I've always managed to cope with my body image without going on an "extreme" or "faddy" diet as I love clothes and fashion as much as I love working out and eating!

I am 37, I am a size 10, and I was just about to pour myself another protein shake after a run, and contemplate what I was going to prepare for tea for under 500 cals when I read your magazine... What am I thinking!!!! It was a real wake up call for me.... Why was I doing this when I love running, I love exercising, I eat healthily but for some reason I felt the 2lbs I'd put on had to go and it had to go NOW!

I love the way I look (in clothes at least!!!) and hey, I'll never be 100% happy in a bikini, but do I care? NO! As long as I have a smile on my face, what does it matter?!?!?! There is nothing more boring or irritating than some one obsessed with a dimple on their thigh when they are a matchstick size 8, or constantly complaining about their flabby arms... or endlessly applying make-up. The self obsessed whining is far less attractive than the image itself.

We all know that a bottle of Pinot is fab on a Friday, with a tasty tikka, but let's just get over it! Enjoy your food but in moderation - we all know what is good for us and what is not - keep active and keep moving..... and more importantly keep smiling.

Thank you for a fab read. I'll be buying again and again!
Love
