How to have a good hair day
Troy Word
This month's issue of marie claire is devoted to all things happy. So it's time to banish bad hair days, and say hello to hot, healthy, happy hair.
But how?
‘Happy hair is fundamentally healthy hair,’ says celebrity stylist Zoe Irwin. ‘It should be full of bounce and shine. Bounce comes from volume and shine is from the cuticles lying flat against the hair shaft, allowing light to be reflected.
'The only way to achieve this near-perfect state is to treat hair and scalp to regular deep-reaching conditioners. Invest in Kérastase Nutritive Nectar Thermique Nourishing Care Leave-In Conditioner, £17.20, Ojon Ultra Hydrating Conditioner, £18, or Andrew Barton Shiny Happy Hair Volume Angel Energising Conditioner, £3.95.
‘I’m also a huge believer that what we put into our bodies is reflected on the outside. I’d definitely advocate the use of supplements, particularly vitamins B and E,’ says Irwin. ‘If you suffer from thinning hair or an irritated scalp, you should consult a nutritionist or trichologist, as it may well be a sign of a nutritional deficiency.’
Hair expert Jane Barnett agrees. ‘Good nutrition and healthy hair are inextricably linked,’ she says. ‘Iron, zinc and B vitamins are all vital and foods such as oily fish, eggs, nuts and seeds make a real difference to our hair.’
And just like skin, the basics – regular exercise, sleep and plenty of water – apply. ‘Supplements can help boost hair growth and condition,’ says Barnett. Look out for Kérastase Desensitive, £25, which includes iron and zinc.
If you have time to do just one thing towards making your hair happier, take a few moments to massage your head. ‘One of the best – and least expensive – things you can do is give yourself a head massage,’ says Irwin. ‘Spread your palms and fingertips over your scalp and gently but firmly move them about. This increases the circulation of blood to the scalp, improving shine and vitality.’

I have the most impossible hair. Fine straight and not much of it. It refuses to go into a style and my menopausal hot flushes makes it lank and flat. Any ideas. I'm at my wits end.
